‘Tuxedo’ is located at 87-89 Albert Road Strathfield. This house was built c.1890 for merchant Joseph Falk, but is best known as the home of Sir Samuel Hordern (1876-1956) from 1900-1914. The house was also known as ‘Albert House’.
Hordern was governing Director of Anthony Hordern & Sons, a famous Sydney shopping emporium but Hordern’s other interests were significant. Of note was his long presidency of the NSW Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) from 1915-1941. Under Hordern, the RAS developed the Royal Easter Show, which is held at Sydney Showgrounds (at Moore Park and from 1998 at Homebush). Hordern’s name is featured on the Hordern Pavillion at Moore Park and the Hordern Lawns and Hordern Sprung at the Showground at Homebush.

Hi Cathy, I found the article on “Tuxedo” very interesting. My Great grandparents lived close by: Laurence Dinnerville, on Alviston Rd. and Willian Butler in Charles Villa ,on Kingsland Rd. I was wondering if these streets still existed or if you had any knowledge of these people. Jan Goodall >

I have seen the name Dinnerville in history searches and not sure about Butler but can look up records. Alviston and Kingsland Rds still exist.

Such a glorious home and great tribute to Sam Hordern. Thanks. Loved reading it. Does it still exist? I remember back in the 60s when I attended Strathfield girls high that Albert road btwn the station and Homebush rd had lost many of the grand houses to what was the new trend then – building blocks of units. Whereas Churchill ave that ran parallel had managed to escape the developers thrust. It was a very pleasant walk every day from my little semi house in Wentworth rd near OTEN to high school via Churchill ave. I loved those beautiful homes. I do hope the street is still intact.

Many of the houses are still intact on Albert Rd, west of Homebush Road. A number are protected by heritage listing.
