‘Newinga’ 25 Agnes Street Strathfield is a substantial two storey home built in the Old English style. The house was designed by architect A V Gorrell, a prominent architect in the interwar period and was the home for many decades of John Alan Vickery (1895-1973) and his wife Margaret (née Swales) (1904-2004).
John Vickery was the son of Joseph Vickery (1857-1930) of Strathfield House. The Vickery’s were a prominent family in Strathfield’s early 20th Century history. Four of Ebenezer Vickery’s children settled in Strathfield in the early 1900s, including Elizabeth Newman of ‘Tiptree’, Joseph Vickery of ‘Strathfield House’, George Begg Vickery of ‘Inveresk’ Coventry Road Homebush and Amy Alfreda Vickery of ‘Lauriston’ The Boulevarde (now Santa Sabina College).
