‘Surrey’ 43 The Crescent Homebush

by Cathy Jones 2024

‘Surrey’ is located at 43 The Crescent Homebush and is a single storey cement rendered Victorian Italianate style house with a hipped roof.  It is located on the 1878 ‘Village of Homebush’ Estate, a subdivision of the larger Underwood Estate.

In December 1878, Augustus Rose, of Wagga Wagga purchased Lots 1 & 2 of Section 11 of the Village of Homebush estate.  He was one of initial purchasers of land from this estate. Augustus Rose (d.1908) married Mary Anne Loughman (d.1919) in 1860.  The couple had two children Alfred William Rose (1854-1943) and Charles Rose (1869-1945).

It is likely the house ‘Surrey’ was built c.1890 on Lot 2.  A house is listed for the first time in the 1892 Sands Directory for A J Rose, Homebush Crescent[1].  In the 1891 NSW Census, Augustus Rose is listed as occupant of a house in Homebush Crescent Homebush with a household of 3 males and 2 females[2].  Homebush Crescent was later renamed The Crescent. In December 1890, Rose registered a power of attorney to his wife Mary Anne Rose[3].  In 1903, Rose was listed as being of ‘independent means’[4].

The house name ‘Surrey’ is noted in Sands Directory and Valuation records.  The house was originally numbered 33 The Crescent but renumbered 43 The Crescent in 1953.

Rose died 1908.  In July 1911, lot 2 containing ‘Surrey’ was transferred to George Gatton[5].  Mary Ann Rose sold Lot 1 in January 1913 which was vacant land and now is 42 The Crescent[6]. In August 1914, the property was transferred to James Alexander Cameron (1864-1932), an accountant[7].

An application for transmission (will) was made in April 1933 by Miriam Blanche Cameron, his widow, following Cameron’s death.  In February 1938, an application for transmission was made by Harold Verney Cameron, independent means[8]. The house was sold in July 1938 to Enid Annie James of Auburn. In November 1960, the house was purchased by Ivan Jelicic and Maria Jelicic, joint tenants.
