Mrs Gewandt was the Strathfield Council Manager of Library Services until the late 1980’s.

Commenting on her decision not to seek re-election in 2008, she stated:

’I have been involved in so many major projects such as creating linkages to different parts of the municipality, upgrading resources available to local parks and I think the two things people always talk about and appreciate is the library, which I have a lot to do with and parks and gardens’ she said (Kabul 2008). She also pushed for street beautification during the Olympics in Underwood Road and fought hard for heritage matters (Kabul 2008).
