‘Ebrington’ 67 Broughton Rd Homebush

By Cathy Jones

‘Ebrington’ 67 Broughton Road Homebush is a single storey brick Federation house with a symmetrical façade built in 1914.  It features a slate hip roof with terracotta ridge capping and front verandah.

This house is located on land granted to Simeon Lord in 1793.  Lord’s grant was combined with other grants and eventually subdivided and sold under the title of the ‘Village of Homebush’ estate in 1878.

By July 1914, Lot 16, Section 13 was owned by William Booker, a builder of Enfield[1].  Booker received approval to build a brick house with a slate roof in July 1914 of an estimated value of £700[2].    Booker was noted as owner and builder.

The house first appears in Sands Directory in 1916 for William Booker[3]. Booker owned the house until his death in 1934[4].  He appeared to the sole occupant of the house.  The property transferred (by transmission) to George Sadler, carpenter, of Eastwood and Walter Dickson, solicitor in April 1934.  In July 1934, the property transferred to Dr John McKenzie of Hamilton, medical practitioner[5].

This house was originally numbered 47 Broughton Road, it was renumbered 67 Broughton Rd in 1957.

Ownership transferred in February 1959 to Anastasia Ryan of Homebush , a widow[6]. In 1963, ownership transferred to Peter and Judith Walsh[7]. It was again sold in 1969.
