Florence Street footpath sign

Florence Street Strathfield

By Cathy Jones

Florence Street would appear to be named after the ‘Florenceville’ estate, which appears on early maps of Strathfield as the estate of Sir George Wigram Allen.

Past residents

The Hon. John Wise MLC [c1856-1942], estate agent and builder, was a member of the Member of NSW Legislative Council from July 1917 to April 1934 and served as Royal Commissioner for Lunacy Laws 1923.  Wise built ‘Glendenning’ 10-12 Florence St.  ‘Glendenning’ was his mother’s maiden name.

Mr Walter Buzacott, Head of Buzacott and Co. Hardware Merchants of the City lived at ‘Winkurra’ from 1906 to 1937.  Buzacott was son of Walter Sewell Buzacott, prominent industrialist.  Buzacott married to George Todman’s daughter, Mildred and served as an Alderman on Strathfield Council.
