‘Clareinnis’ The Boulevarde Strathfield (demolished)

By Cathy Jones

‘Clareinnis’, a large two storey residence, was located on The Boulevarde Strathfield near Strathfield Station and built c.1880.  The large residence was built by David Buchannan (1825-1890).  Buchannan was an author, barrister and Member of the NSW Parliament Legislative Council (MLC). He was an eccentric figure in NSW colonial politics, known for his consistency in being inconsistent, aggressive oratory and passionate support for women’s rights.

Buchannan died in 1890, however his widow remained at ‘Clareinnis’ until her death ten years later.  Later the house was occupied by Dr Beattie and then Dr Manery.  It was demolished in the redevelopment of Strathfield Plaza, which opened in 1981.
