Shortland Avenue was originally called Elsie Street and Allan Street. The street was renamed Shortland Avenue in 1939 (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article225088003).
The street is named in honour of Percy Douglas Shortland, Alderman of Strathfield Council, Mayor of Strathfield [1933-38], Barrister-at-law and District Court Judge. Shortland resigned from Council upon his appointment to the District Court.
