The Back to Black: David Jones family in Strathfield was held on October – 1 December 2024 at the Ironbark Gallery, Strathfield Library & Innovation Hub.
David Jones, one of the world’s oldest department stores still operating under its original name, was founded in George Street, in Sydney 1838 by Welsh immigrant David Jones in Sydney. The store thrived due to Jones’s integrity, dedication to offering high-quality goods, and commitment to customer service. Successive generations of his family innovated and expanded the business, maintaining control for over 140 years.
The Jones family also had deep connections to Strathfield, with David’s son, Dr. Philip Sydney Jones, settling in the district in the 1860s. He was a respected physician, known for his work in combating tuberculosis. His move to Strathfield encouraged other family members and associates to follow, helping to develop the area as a desirable location for professionals and merchants.
The Jones family intermarried with other prominent families, creating extended networks of influence. Over the years, various family members and associates settled in Strathfield, influencing its development. Edward Lloyd Jones, David’s son, expanded the department store into a luxury retailer and also lived in the district but tragically died in a train accident from Strathfield in 1894. His sons continued the business, with his grandson Charles Lloyd Jones serving as Chairman for nearly 40 years.
The family’s influence extended beyond business into community life. They contributed to Strathfield’s development through their involvement in architecture, education, and the establishment of Strathfield Council, as well as building the Trinity Congregational Church in 1889. Many of their homes, schools, and businesses were centred in the area, forming a lasting legacy in Strathfield’s history.
The exhibition is a journey through the history of David Jones and their stories and legacy in the Strathfield district.
The opening of the exhibition was held on Thursday 17 October 2024. Talks were delivered by Cathy Jones, Secretary, Strathfield-Homebush District Historical Society on Sunday 10 and 17 November 2024 to accompany the exhibition.
