N B Love Industries – flour milling

By Cathy Jones (2021)

N B Love Industries was established in Enfield (now Strathfield South) by early Australian aviator Nigel Borland Love (1892–1979).

The business was originally a flour mill but later produced bread and stock feed.  Love registered the company N. B. Love Pty Ltd and drew up plans to build a Mill on the three acre site he purchased at Braidwood Street Strathfield South. The site had railway access required for transportation.  The new Mill opened in 1935 costing £12,000 including machinery. The central building was four storey brick building and grain silos. Love embraced innovation and enterprise and continually grew his business. He adopted the brand name ‘Supreme’ and introduced controls to produce a quality flour with an unusual degree of uniformity.  Among his initiatives, he developed ‘Fine-Tex’ flour for cake-making and an increased-protein flour ‘Pro-Max’ for franchising bakers.

In 1952, Love set up Millmaster Feeds Pty Ltd to produce stock feed pellets at Enfield.  In 1958, the company started bread production at Enfield, introducing a high-speed dough development technique and also manufacturing gluten and starch. N B Love Industries exported internationally and supplied flour to George Weston Foods in Australia and the UK. In 1962, George Weston (Australia) Pty Ltd purchased the business, which continues to operate at the Strathfield South site.
