Centenary Playground, Strathfield

By Cathy Jones

To celebrate the centenary of Strathfield Council’s incorporation in 1985, Strathfield Council established a new park called ‘Centenary Playground’ in Alviston Street Strathfield.  The park was originally laid out as a children’s playground.

In June 1983, Council commenced negotiations with the Strathfield Homebush Parish of the Uniting Church (which faces Homebush Road) to purchase land facing Alviston Street that contained a tennis court for the purpose of establishing a public reserve.  By July 1984, the land was transferred into Council ownership.   The Strathfield Homebush Uniting Church became known as the West Sydney Chinese Church c.1985.

In July 1985, Council resolved to name park ‘Centenary Playground’ as 1985 was Strathfield Council’s 100th anniversary of incorporation.
