‘Barden’ 15 Birriwa Ave, Strathfield Sth

By Cathy Jones 2025

‘Bardon’ 15 Birriwa Avenue Strathfield South was built in 1928 on Lot 18 and is a brick interwar California Bungalow with a terracotta roof.

This land on which the house is built was transferred to builder William F Bush in 1927.  Approval was granted to Bush in May 1928 to construct 15 houses in Birriwa Street. Assuming completion of the house, Bush transferred ownership in October 1928 Edward Alfred Johnson and Hilda Frances Johnson as joint tenants.  The house first appears in the 1931 Sands Directory with Edward Johnson as an occupier. The house was originally named ‘Papanui’ and later ‘Bardon’ by later owners.  The house was originally numbered 16 Birriwa Avenue but was renumbered in 1957 as 15 Birriwa Avenue.

In April 1949, Lettie Laker (mortgagee exercising power of sale) sold the property to Clarence Baden Collard of Belfield, locomotive engine driver, and Elizabeth Goundry Collard, his wife as joint tenants.  It appears that it was renamed ‘Bardon’ at this time. In October 1975, Elizabeth Collard was registered as the sole owner of the property after the death of her husband.  The property next changed owners in 1987.
