In response to a request on the history of this house.
‘Shawlands’ 53 Pomeroy Street Homebush is an interwar style cottage. It is located on Section 25 of the Underwood Estate.
The vacant land (lots parts 1 & 2) was transferred in November 1917 to Eustace Maurice Goldspring, a builder. It is likely that Goldspring was the builder of the house, which was sold in October 1918 to Patrick Joseph Lohan, of Marrickville, postal official.
Lohan first appears as an occupant in the 1922 Sands Directory (which reflects occupancy in the 1921 year) but it was likely it was previously leased. The house was named ‘Shawlands’.
In December 1921, Lohan transferred ownership to James Maxwell, of Darlinghurst, engineer. Maxwell is listed in Sands Directory as the occupant until 1932, the final publication date. The address is ‘Shawlands’ 8 Pomeroy Street Homebush. Maxwell maintained ownership until November 1947, when it was transferred to Robert Tovey, an Oxy Welder, and Mary Tovey, his wife as joint tenants.
In October 1948, the house was sold to Clarence Melville Poole, a grocer, of Glebe and his wife Mary Agnes Poole. In February 1986, Mary Poole was registered as sole proprietor.
The house was originally numbered 8 Pomeroy Street Homebush. It was originally located in Homebush Council. This Council was merged with Strathfield Council in 1947. The house was renumbered in 1964 as 53 Pomeroy Street.
