‘Glenthorpe’ 78 Redmyre Road Strathfield was built in 1907 by John Lyon Gardiner, a prolific local builder. The house is a single storey Federation Arts and Crafts style house of face brick with a hipped and gabled roof with slate tiles.
This property is built on the Bushy Hill Estate, which was offered for sale in 1880 by estate agents and auctioneers Hardie and Gorman. Part Lots 1 and 2, Section 1 was sold to Maria Kurcher in February 1881. In December 1906, this vacant land was sold to John Lyon Gardiner, a builder. Gardiner built many Federation styled houses in Strathfield in streets such as Churchill Avenue, Albert Road, Vernon Street and the four houses located at 72-78 Redmyre Road. Gardiner moved from Strathfield around 1914 to Bellevue Hill, with his wife Isabella. It is likely he retired as a builder as he was aged in his 60’s by this time, however he taught carpentry and joinery at the Sydney Technical College before his death in 1929.
Following construction of the house, in May 1908, Gardiner transferred the property to Herman Pauch, of Summer Hill, engineer. The house first appears in Sands Directory in 1908 named ‘Glenthorpe’, occupied by Herman Pauch.
In March 1925, following the death of Herman Pauch in July 1924, the property was transferred to Perpetual Trustee Company Ltd (application by transmission). According to Sands Directory, the house was occupied by Mrs Sarah Pauch and then by Edith Pauch until at least 1932, when this directory ceased publication. It appears that ownership remained in Herman Pauch’s estate until 1978, though probate was granted in 1924.
The property transferred in June 1978 to William James Dwyer of Strathfield, and Joan Adele Dwyer, his wife as joint tenants. Following the death of William Dwyer, ownership transferred to Joan Adele Dwyer in May 1985. The property was then transferred to Bruce Frederick Clement and Margot Clement as joint tenants, in June 1985.
