87-89 Burlington Road Homebush

This house is currently on the market and I received a request for historical information about the house. I am unaware of a house name but it was built in 1939-1940 when house naming was less common.

87-89 Burlington Road Homebush is a large single storey red textured interwar home with a hipped roof of glazed terracotta tiles.  The house was built in 1939-1940 for John James Bowie, an engineer and his wife Mary on land subdivided at the rear of ‘Roxmere’ 58 The Crescent Homebush. This site is located on Section 11 of the Village of Homebush Estate (deposited plan 400).  The house was formerly numbered 79 Burlington Road but was renumbered in 1957.

The ‘Village of Homebush” Estate was an 1878 subdivision of land that came under the ownership of James Underwood.   The estate measured 306 acres and created Burlington Rd, Beresford Road, Abbotsford Rd, Bridge St, Coventry Rd, Meredith St, Homebush Crescent and Bellevue Street.  A section of Coventry Road has been renamed Mackenzie Street.  Bellevue Street has been renamed Homebush Road and Homebush Crescent has been renamed The Crescent.

The section of Burlington Road, between Meredith Street and Bridge Road, is located on Sections 11 and 12 of the ‘Village of Homebush’ Estate.  Residential development commenced c.1880 in this section of Burlington Road.

In December 1938, land at the rear of ‘Roxmere’ 58 The Crescent was subdivided and sold to John James Bowie, an engineer, and his wife Mary.  This vacant lot, Lot B, faced Burlington Road.  In March 1939, Bowie lodged a development application to build a brick dwelling of seven rooms at an estimated value of £1850  The builder was A B Whitehouse, 21 Second Avenue Eastwood.  The application was approved at meeting of Strathfield Council on 28 March 1939.

The house changed owner in 1941 to Eliza Anne Herd Shore, wife of Charles Shore, Company Manager for the amount of £2940. In 1942, the house was sold to Leslie Comber Brown, company manager. This house in recent years has been used as a Veterinary Surgery.
