Strathfield Council resolved at the June 2022 to light the Council Chambers in the rainbow colours to signify Pride Month during the month of June.

As incongruous as it might appear to be lighting Strathfield Council Chambers in rainbow lights it is interesting to remember that David Widdup (1947-1999) made Strathfield the political epicentre of Gay Sydney in the 1972 Federal election. He stood for the seat of Lowe as the first ever openly gay independent against Prime Minister Billy McMahon under the very camp slogan “I’ve Got My Eye on Billy’s Seat.”

The fact that McMahon was widely rumoured to be homosexual guaranteed press coverage. Campaigning on abortion and gay law reform Widdup received 218 votes. He had grown up in a housing commission house on Amaroo Avenue in Strathfield and attended South Strathfield Public School and Homebush Boys High. He went on to be a teacher and work for the Australian Teachers Federation and then as Dr David Widdup was the inaugural Executive Director of the Federation of Australian Science and Technological Societies.
