‘Camden Lodge’ restored

The much below ‘Camden Lodge’ 102 Burlington Road Homebush, that was badly damaged in a fire, is being restored.

In 2023, works have commenced by a new owner to restore the building.  A project page by the architects show a montage of images of the restoration, rebuild and additions https://www.literatrotta.com/projects/homebushhouse

This photo was taken in May 2023 and shows progress of the restoration and rebuilding of ‘Camden Lodge’.  Further articles will be published on the progress of this project.

  1. Good morning Cathy,

Just saw your informative post about Camden Lodge. However, I read that it’s for subscribers only. Although I am a subscriber already, I entered my email address, was sent a code, entered the code and found it was invalid. I still can’t read all your post! Would you kindly advise me?

This mail gives me an opportunity to ask about another matter. I have a few colour photos of 8 Marion St, front and back, taken in 1957. THat house has recently been “redeveloped” into a mansion which causes me to wonder if Marion St is indeed heritage listed, as I believed was the case. I’ll be happy to send you the photos if they are of interest. (I lived in the house as a child).

Thank you for the hard work and expertise always so evident in Strathfield Heritage.

    Kind regards, John

“…the deeper truth is that every Australian who is not a member of the First Nations is a beneficiary of stolen country, brutal dispossession, institutionalised racial discrimination and callous indifference. The expropriation of the territory of a generous people, and the devastating frontier war and dispersal that followed, is Australia’s true foundation story, not the voyage of Captain Cook or the arrival of the First Fleet”. –

I checked the post and have changed the setting. The software was upgraded recently and it must have changed the settings. Hope it is Ok. Marion Street is still a conservation area. Happy to take any historic photos. I will be posting more histories in the next few weeks including Marion Street. Thanks for your note. I would not know if there was a problem, unless someone told me.

      Regards

  2. Oh no!
Camden Lodge was originally built by my grandfather, Robert Trevethan, blue-metal quarry owner, as the family home…..why had it not been heritage listed so it could be restored instead of modernistically replaced?

    1. Robin, the building was almost destroyed by fire and then left to deteriorate. The fact that the new owners have embarked on such a challenging and expensive project is amazing. Maybe judge it when they finish.

      1. Thank you for responding Cathy, I will take your advice & wait till completion of the project. It would be quite acceptable if the original building were restored to its former glory as perhaps a concierge residence for the newer building/s at rear.

I am confused…. just further read your post, Cathy, & the photo does indeed show the house being restored to original….however, the link shows it being gobbled up into the very modern ‘Homebush House.” ?????

    1. The restored house is on the ste of the older house, there is a newer development at rear from my understanding. I haven’t seen the full development application.

  5. This house was originally that of my great grandmother and great grandfather (all be it with a different name). My understanding was that it was heritage listed before the fire, so I am surprised that such an unsympathetic addition has been made. I understand that changes would have to be made to accommodate modern living, but I get disappointed with current architectural trends to change the character of houses completely so the addition because a statement in its own right, rather than building on the original character of the building. Like my aunt, Robin Pollock, I would have preferred a more sympathetic addition.

  6. Looks like an odd sort of addition to attach to a heritage house of an entirely different style. What is the addition? Lavish home or hotel or conference centre – can’t tell from the pictures.
The back certainly does not match the front!

  7. The fire was clearly deliberate the new owner was twice denied redevelopment, far far too suspicious, he was then ordered by the court to restore the property where they instead left it for many years to deteriorate further in order to strengthen another DA.
