60 Beresford Road Strathfield

60 Beresford Road Strathfield is a Post-War International style house built in 1955 and designed by Emil Fretze, Architect, RAIA (1925-2003) who was noted for his architectural designs as senior and later chief architect for the Commonwealth Bank post World War II (which included the redesign of the Strathfield Commonwealth Bank in 1961). 60 Beresford Road is a rare example of this style in the Strathfield area.

The land on which this house was built was formerly part of the ‘Agincourt’ estate, home of pharmacist Washington Soul (which is now Jesmond Nursing Home in Albert Road Strathfield. The land was bought by Karl Berjak who lodged an application to build a new house designed by Fretze.

Fretze was apparently a friend of Karl Berjac and his wife. With contributions from the Berjacs, Fretze undertook a rare foray into domestic architecture.  The house is an important example of the domestic work of architect Emil Fretze.  His own home was built in 1958 and is located at 15 Vernon Street Cammeray (https://www.bresicwhitney.com.au/buy/15-vernon-street-cammeray-34377)

60 Beresford Road is included in the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) list of significant architecture of the Twentieth Century in NSW.

  1. Thank you for this item, Cathy. There appears to be a glitch: when I click on ‘ Read more of this post’, nothing happens. Gremlins! Strathfield Heritage continues to set an example for all such interest groups.  Kind regards, John

      1. Everything works beautifully now, Cathy. I just realised that I’m eight years older than this heritage house! However, since I wasn’t designed by a famous international architect, I’ll never feature in Strathfield Heritage…sob… All good wishes, John
