View and learn about the history of Strathfield’s heritage conservation areas as you walk along its distinct and famous tree lined streets and boulevardes full of Victorian, Federation, Californian Bungalow and Post War housing. The tour is hosted by Cathy Jones, who tell you about the many famous Australian families who lived there – such as the Arnott Family. The tour finishes with a lavish afternoon tea.
The tour commences and finishes at Strathfield Council, corner Redmyre Road and Homebush Road Strathfield. The tour features the Abbotsford Road, Homebush Road and Meredith Street Heritage Conservation Areas as well as many historic homes, churches, war memorials and public buildings. This tour features a wide variety of historic properties such as Victorian style mansions of wealthy merchants of the 1880s and 1890s and homes of the Federation and Bungalow periods.
‘Village of Homebush’ was the name of the 1878 subdivision of the large Underwood Estate, itself located on the site of Australia’s first land grants (1793) to free settler farmers, hence known as ‘Liberty Plains’. Though this land spectacularly failed as working farms, it proved to be a successful and desirable place to live in the late 19th century after the establishment of the railway in 1855 at Homebush, linking this district to Sydney and Parramatta.
