‘Eurona’ was built in 1912 at an estimated cost of £1230. This was one of the final houses designed by prolific architect Charles Slatyer, who designed many notable houses in the Strathfield area in the late 19th and early 20th century. This house was originally named ‘Blair Lodge’ when owned by its original owners James and Mary Hunter. It was purchased in 1919 by Victoria Spurway who lived in this house with her husband Frank Granger Spurway. The Spurways renamed the house ‘Eurona’.
Spurway (1890-1966) was a prominent and wealthy Sydney manufacturer and proprietor of Frank G Spurway Ltd, manufacturer of tubes, electrical fittings, die makers etc. Among his many interests he was the owner of racehorses including ‘Vagabond’ and “Proctor’. Spurway donated land in the Sydney suburb of Newport, which is now a public reserve named ‘Spurway Park’.
Spurway was a relation of the Spurway family in Burlington Road (featured a few weeks ago at https://strathfieldheritage.org/2019/01/07/orara-burlington-road-homebush).
