’Glenholme’ 17 Broughton Rd, Homebush

‘Glenholme’ 17 Broughton Road Homebush is a Federation style cottage. It is located on the original Crown land granted to Frederick Meredith in 1793.

‘Glenholme’ is located on part Lot 8, section 4 of the Village of Homebush estate.  Lot 8 was acquired by John Goodlet, a merchant in October 1890.  This land was sold to George Astle, a builder, in March 1912.  Lot 8 was located on the corner of Broughton Road and Rochester Street. Astle subdivided Lot 8 into two lots.  17 Broughton Road is located on part Lot 8.

Astle lodged an application in April 1912 to build a brick cottage on Broughton Road of an estimated value of £600.  In July 1913, Astle transferred the property to John Thomas Derriman Irish (1852-1922), a saddler and ironmonger.  The house appears for the first time in Sands Directory 1914 for John Irish who named the residence ‘Glenholme’.  Astle was a local speculative builder who built other houses in Homebush including ‘Brigadoon’ 15 Broughton Road.

The house was originally numbered 13 Broughton Road Homebush and renumbered 17 Broughton Road in 1957.

Following the death of John Irish in 2022, his wife Ann Rebecca Irish (née Cook) is noted as the occupier.  Mrs Irish died in 1944.  In March 1945, the property was transferred to the Public Trustee by transmission. In May 1915, the property was sold to Zelma Blackwell, Homebush, spinster.  In January 1977, the property transferred to David Henry DeMaine of Homebush, Storeman.
